No Ice Production

Icemakers are fragile, profitable and not very hard to repair. However, an icemaker will not cycle if the temperature in the freezer is above 20F. They work best below 15F. Icemakers are like the canary in a mine. They often indicate a pending problem.

Check the temperatures first and fix any temperature problems before concluding that there is an icemaker problem. The freezer food temperature should be below 15F and the fresh food temperature should be 36-39F. Check food, not air temperatures! Jam your thermometer into  a frozen package in the freezer and a jar of jelly or mayo in the fresh food section. If the customer is watching, wipe it off first!

See Temps Not Right.

Repairs fall into the following catagories in order of likelihood:

1. Bad Icemakers. See Icemaker Testing and the GE icemaker test cord to make the water turn on See Sample.

2. Bad Water Valves. See Water Valve Testing.

3. Clogged Filters. Clogged filters on all new refrigerators can cause small or no cube production. These are supposed to be changed by the customer. See Filter Sample. 4. Inadequate Water Supply. Rusty or gritty water will clog the inlet line or inlet strainer. Testing the water valve will uncover this issue.

5. Bad optic controls. Whirlpool products use an optic system to monitor the fullness of cube bin and shut off ice production. Optic devices fail often. This optic system is discussed in Icemaker Testing Videos. Also See optic diagnosis tech sheet 1.
