Ice cubes clumping and freezing together in the bin (usually the rear) is a common complaint. It has several causes:
1. Wicking. Wicking, the most common cause of clumping, is the gradual flow of water over the side of the mold due to corrosion of the mold coating. Water follows the corrosion up over the top and drips into the bin. It is hard for a customer to understand until you show them the mold and comment on the bits of paint, black specks, that they have been eating. See sample.
A long, thick icicle will form under the mold. Cubes tend to be undersized due to loss of water that has wicked over the side. See wicking video.
2. Bad Water Valve. Ice will usually form both in and out of the bin, even down the freezer wall, as it trickles down the fill tube. There may also be large quantities of ice. See sample. With wicking, a glacier forms in many layers.
3. Freezer too Warm. Intermittent freezing temperatures, like a kid leaving the door open, will result in a frozen puddle in the bin with all the cubes stuck together. Some cubes, on top af the frozen clump, may be the correct size.
